Each Makahiki year opens when Makali'i (the Pleiades) rises above the eastern horizon exactly as the sun sets —
traditionally around November 17th in Honolulu. The anchor Hilo is the first new crescent that
appears after that opening — the lunar cycle that begins the active Makahiki season. Every subsequent Hilo marks the start of a new
lunar month within the year, until the cycle closes with the next Makali'i rising.
The table groups all Hilo events by Makahiki year rather than Gregorian calendar, restoring the traditional frame of the sky calendar.
